A monastery founded in honor of the Don Icon of the Mother of God after the miraculous deliverance of Moscow from the Crimean khan's raid in 1591. The architectural ensemble includes two cathedrals — the Small (Old) and the Great — fortress walls with towers, and a unique necropolis.

The Donskoy Monastery was founded by Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich in 1591 on the site where a field church with the Don Icon of the Mother of God stood during the repulse of the Crimean Khan Gazy-Girey's raid. According to tradition, the icon, painted by Theophanes the Greek, was in Dmitry Donskoy's camp at the Battle of Kulikovo. The first Small Cathedral, consecrated in 1593, is a single-domed pillarless church possibly built by the architect Fyodor Kon. In 1684–1693, the Great Cathedral was erected in the Naryshkin Baroque style with a unique eight-tiered carved iconostasis. During the Soviet era the monastery housed the Museum of Architecture, which saved many churches from demolition — fragments of destroyed buildings were brought here. Patriarch Tikhon was secretly reburied here. The monastery was returned to the Church in 1991.

The Donskoy Monastery is one of the most poetic and historically rich monasteries of Moscow. Its foundation is linked with the dramatic events of summer 1591, when a 150,000-strong army of the Crimean Khan Gazy-Girey approached Moscow. In the Russian camp was the Don Icon of the Mother of God — the very one that, according to tradition, accompanied Dmitry Donskoy at the Battle of Kulikovo. After the enemy's miraculous retreat, Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich ordered a monastery to be founded on this spot.

The first cathedral — the Small, or Old — was built in record time and consecrated in 1593. It is a small single-domed church, presumably the work of the architect Fyodor Kon, creator of the White City fortifications. Its austere forms contrast with the sumptuous Great Cathedral, erected a century later under Tsarevna Ekaterina Alexeyevna. The Great Cathedral is a masterpiece of Naryshkin Baroque: a four-pillared five-domed church with an extensive refectory and a tent-roofed bell tower. Its interior features an eight-tiered carved gilded iconostasis — one of the finest examples of late-17th-century Moscow carving.
In 1812 the monastery was looted by the French but was quickly restored. The Donskoy necropolis is one of the finest in Moscow: here rest the historian Vasily Klyuchevsky, architect Osip Bove, philosopher Pyotr Chaadayev, painter Vasily Perov, and writers Alexander Sumarokov and Ivan Shmelev. In the Soviet period the monastery became a museum of architecture, and this saved many destroyed churches — the high reliefs from the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, fragments of the Sukharev Tower, and the window surrounds of demolished churches were brought here. Patriarch Tikhon, who died in 1925, was secretly reburied here; his relics were discovered in 1992. Today the Donskoy Monastery is a functioning monastery, and the Don Icon, housed in the Tretyakov Gallery, is brought here annually for veneration.

The Danilov Monastery is Moscow's oldest monastery, founded around 1282 by the first appanage prince of Moscow, Daniel Alexandrovich, the youngest son of Alexander Nevsky. It is the first monastery dedicated to St. Daniel the Stylite, the prince's heavenly patron. After a period of decline in the 14th–15th centuries, the monastery was revived by Ivan the Terrible in 1560. The architectural ensemble includes the Cathedral of the Seven Ecumenical Councils, the Trinity Cathedral in the Classical style (architect Osip Bove, 1833–1838), the gate church, and mighty fortress walls with towers. The monastery's cemetery is Moscow's oldest, where Gogol, Khomyakov, and Yazykov were buried. In 1983 the monastery became the first in the USSR to be returned to the Church and became the patriarch's residence. Today it is the largest spiritual and administrative center of the Russian Orthodox Church, hosting Councils of Bishops and sessions of the Holy Synod.

The Danilov Monastery marks the starting point of Moscow monasticism. Its founder, Prince Daniel Alexandrovich (1261–1303), was the youngest son of Alexander Nevsky and the first appanage prince of Moscow. It was under him that the small appanage on the Moscow River began its transformation into the center of a future state. Around 1282, Prince Daniel founded, across the river on the southern outskirts of the Moscow of that time, a wooden church and monastery in the name of his heavenly patron — Daniel the Stylite.
After Daniel's death in 1303, he was buried in the monastery cemetery as a simple monk — in accordance with the prince's own will, as he had taken monastic vows before his death. His relics were later discovered incorrupt and the prince was canonized. In the 14th century the monastery fell into decline and the brethren were transferred to the Kremlin. But in 1560 Ivan the Terrible revived the monastery, building the stone Church of the Seven Ecumenical Councils.
The present ensemble took shape in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Trinity Cathedral in the Empire style is the work of Osip Bove, the architect who rebuilt Moscow after the fire of 1812. Its monumental portico and broad dome became the architectural dominant of the monastery. The 17th-century walls and towers gave the monastery the appearance of a fortress. Outstanding figures of Russian culture found their final rest in the monastery cemetery: Nikolai Gogol (later reburied at Novodevichy), the poet Nikolai Yazykov, and the philosopher Alexei Khomyakov.
In 1930 the monastery was closed and turned into a juvenile detention center. The ancient necropolis was almost entirely destroyed. But in 1983, riding the wave of preparations for the millennium of the Baptism of Rus, the Danilov Monastery became the first in the USSR to be returned to the Church. The patriarch and the staff of the Moscow Patriarchate moved here. The cathedrals and bell tower were restored, and a patriarchal residence was built. Today the Danilov Monastery is the spiritual heart of the Russian Orthodox Church, the venue for major ecclesiastical gatherings, and the residence of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

A monastery founded on the site where Muscovites met the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in 1395, when Moscow was miraculously saved from Tamerlane's invasion. Located on one of Moscow's oldest streets — Bolshaya Lubyanka.

The Sretensky Monastery was founded in 1397 by Grand Prince Vasily I to commemorate the miraculous deliverance of Moscow from Tamerlane's forces. In 1395, as the fearsome conqueror approached the capital, the wonder-working Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was brought from Vladimir to Moscow. The monastery was founded on the spot where Muscovites, led by Metropolitan Cyprian, met the holy icon. The main cathedral, dedicated to the Meeting of the Vladimir Icon, was built in 1679 under Tsar Fyodor Alexeyevich. The architectural ensemble also includes the Church of Mary of Egypt, a bell tower, and monastic buildings. In the Soviet era the monastery was closed and the cathedral turned into an NKVD garage. In the 1990s the monastery was revived and became a major spiritual center with a seminary and Moscow's largest Orthodox publishing house.

The story of the Sretensky Monastery begins with one of the most dramatic episodes of Russian history — the invasion of Tamerlane in 1395. Timur the Lame, conqueror of half the world, advanced on Russia, sweeping away everything in his path. Yelets was ravaged, the Ryazan lands devastated, and an army of tens of thousands stood on the border of the Moscow principality. Terror gripped Moscow. Grand Prince Vasily I marched to the Oka River with his army, but the forces were unequal.
Metropolitan Cyprian then ordered the wonder-working icon of the Mother of God to be brought from Vladimir. For ten days a religious procession carried the holy image to Moscow. On August 26, 1395, at Kuchkovo Field (today's Lubyanka Square), the icon was met by the metropolitan, the princely family, and thousands of Muscovites. And a miracle occurred: on that very day Tamerlane, after standing on the border for two weeks, turned his troops south. The chronicle relates that a majestic Woman surrounded by a heavenly host appeared to him in a dream and forbade him from advancing on Russia.
Two years after the miraculous deliverance, in 1397, Prince Vasily I ordered a monastery to be founded on the site where the icon was met. From then on the Sretensky Monastery became the destination of an annual religious procession from the Kremlin in commemoration of the miracle. The Cathedral of the Meeting, built in 1679 under Tsar Fyodor Alexeyevich, is a spacious five-domed church with a tent-roofed bell tower, typical of late-17th-century Moscow architecture.
In the 20th century the monastery's fate was tragic. In 1925 the arrested Patriarch Tikhon was brought here under house arrest. He died within these walls. In the 1930s the monastery was closed, the churches stripped of their domes, and a garage installed in the cathedral. But revival began in 1991, and today the Sretensky Monastery is one of the most active in Moscow. It houses the Sretensky Theological Seminary, publishes a great deal of Orthodox literature, and the restored cathedral once again welcomes worshippers on Bolshaya Lubyanka.

An ancient monastery founded by St. Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow, in the early 14th century. Situated on a high hill, hence the name "Vysoko-Petrovsky." Peter the Great prayed here for salvation during the Streltsy uprising, and his mother Tsarina Natalya Naryshkina built the Bogolyubsky Church.

The Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery is one of Moscow's oldest, founded around 1315 by Metropolitan Peter, the first prelate to transfer the metropolitan see from Kiev to Moscow. Located on a high bank of the Neglinnaya River, hence its name. The monastery's heyday is linked with the Naryshkin family — relatives of Tsarina Natalya Kirillovna, mother of Peter the Great. In the 1680s–1690s their funds built the Bogolyubsky Church (the Naryshkin burial vault), the Church of Sergius of Radonezh, monastic cells, and a bell tower. The ensemble's architecture is a vivid example of Moscow Baroque. In the Soviet era the monastery was closed and housed various institutions. Today it has been revived as a stauropegial monastery. At the center of the ensemble stands the ancient Cathedral of Metropolitan Peter, built by Aleviz Fryazin in 1514–1517.

The Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery is a place where the fates of the first Moscow saint and the first Russian emperor intersect. Its foundation is attributed to Metropolitan Peter, who in 1315 transferred the metropolitan see from Vladimir to Moscow, thereby predetermining the transformation of a small principality into the spiritual capital of Russia. According to his vita, Peter chose the high hill above the Neglinnaya for solitary prayer and built a wooden church there.

The stone Cathedral of Metropolitan Peter was erected in 1514–1517 by the Italian architect Aleviz Fryazin — the same who built the Kremlin's Cathedral of the Archangel. It is an octagonal tower-shaped church crowned with a helmet-like dome — a form unique in Moscow architecture, reminiscent of Italian centralized buildings. Such churches were probably intended for the Kremlin, but of the grand plan only the Vysoko-Petrovsky cathedral has survived.

A fateful turn in the monastery's history occurred at the end of the 17th century. The Naryshkin family, from whom Peter the Great's mother Tsarina Natalya Kirillovna came, chose the monastery as their family burial vault. In 1684–1685 the Bogolyubsky Church was built, beneath whose vaults many representatives of the family are interred, including the Tsarina's brothers Ivan and Afanasy Naryshkin, killed during the Streltsy uprising of 1682. Peter himself, according to tradition, prayed in this church before the decisive battle with the streltsy.

The Naryshkin period transformed the monastery. The complex was enriched with a gate Church of the Intercession with an elegant bell tower, the Church of Sergius of Radonezh, monastic blocks, and the abbot's residence in the Moscow Baroque style. White-stone carving, red brick walls, ornamental window surrounds — all this creates one of the most picturesque monastic ensembles in central Moscow. In the Soviet era the monastery was closed, its buildings occupied by a library, workshops, and rehearsal rooms. In the 1990s the monastery was returned to the Church, and today it is a functioning monastery preserving the memory of St. Peter and the Naryshkin family.
